While it’s true that not everybody in the world loves cats, it’s certainly true that felines dominate social media more than any other animal. I suppose it all started with the adorable, and now clichėd, “Hang In There, Baby!” kitten posters which bizarrely ruled the 70s and 80s. However it started, the cat craze is here to stay. One of the best sources for all things feline is tumblr. I’ve canvassed tumblr far and wide to bring you the six best cat tumblr blogs.
6. i ♥ cat gifs
“All cat GIFs, all the time.”
Is there anything better than cat gifs? Okay, maybe there’s a *few* things that trump a good cat gif, but not much. From straight animated little video shorts to cleverly Photoshopped kitties, this blog has it all. I swear it took me a minute to realize that last week’s photo of three cat-tastic pals hanging around with cut open watermelon hats was actually digitally altered! In my defense, those fruit hats look so real and they even cast a shadow when two of the cats toss it off their heads.
“Garfield Minus Garfield is a site dedicated to removing Garfield from the Garfield comic strips in order to reveal the existential angst of a certain young Mr. Jon Arbuckle. It is a journey deep into the mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness and depression in a quiet American suburb.”
This page is wonderfully strange and just gives my existential lovin’ heart a little thrill. The concept is quirky and original and is really just hilariously sad. Seriously, if you really stop and think about it, these altered comics turn rather poignant when you let yourself catch a glimpse of the projected loneliness of Jon. The best one is of Jon, a sock puppet, and Garfield in mid-erase with Jon saying, “At least you care”.
“This is a collection of the cutest kittens we find on the web daily. If you would like to submit your own picture of a kitten, use the submission form.”
The admins, or “kitteeneers”, of this aggregate site look far and wide across the vast recesses of the net to bring you the cutest, most adorable photos of cats from around the world. Siamese kittens, a newborn fur ball, blue-eyed black and white cats, and even a one-eared cat named Captain fill the screen as you scroll down and down the page. I was going to say my favourite picture is of an all white skinny cat named Casper but then directly below Casper there’s another gorgeous long-haired cat laying out in nature, amongst the luscious blades of grass and colourful flowers, and therein lies the problem: each cat is just as adorable as the next.
“Where literature has whiskers and pointy ears. “
Unfortunately, this site is no longer updated. However, there are about 200 awesome photos in the archive of writers and their cats. Jack Kerouac looks uncharacteristically content as he cradles a cute cat just like a baby. Jean Paul-Sartre edits whilst his fluffy friend hangs comfortably over his arm. Ernest Hemmingway sits to supper with his cat, a bottle of booze sits there between them, with three other bottles hanging out to their side. Doris Lessing smiles at her cat. There are many others, and each one is a total delight, which secures this page as a ‘must’ for writers and cat lovers alike.
This Blog Carries No Information Tag
It does, however, display lots and lots of beautiful, high quality photos of cats. This page is very aesthetically pleasing and is certainly one of the lovelier blogs on Tumblr. Boasting an impressive cover photo, the entire blog is filled with sleek, gorgeous looking cats of all breeds and poses. They also happily encourage submissions, like many of the cat blogs on this list.
“I decided there is not enough internet space devoted to pictures of cats trying to fit into anything they can. So I have graciously decided to take on this challenge. 20% of revenue generated from clicking on ads will be donated to animal shelters.”
This is a hilarious and adorable page that any cat lover will certainly appreciate. Cats have the innate urge to squeeze their furry little bodies into the most uncomfortable, small, enclosed spaces they can find. Whether this is a well-stocked cupboard or a tiny crack between furniture, cats seem to be able to sniff this out and poke their way into each and every possible nook and cranny. Well, this page takes full advantage of this silly and oddly enduring habit by only posting photos of cats squeezing themselves into odd and seemingly impossible positions. Also, the fact that they donate part of the revenue gathered from adverts is pretty darn awesome as well.
