Facebook is a social media phenomena that has not only altered Internet culture, it has essentially changed the way people think. Facebook enables people across the globe to reunite with that old friend/flame/person-you-kinda-knew-in-high-school-and-decide-to-send-them-a-friend-request-for-no-real-reason-at-all. Yeah, it’s awesome for all of those things. It also provides a platform to share everything and anything with your “friends” via photos, videos, status updates, and links in pretty much the easiest and laziest way possible. But social networking is not the only thing FB is good for. Aside from socializing with family, friends, co-workers, and that person you “met” in whatever FB group, Facebook also hosts a number of wonderful celebrity and community pages. Some are political, some are celebrity fan pages, and some are just downright silly and funny. There’s really no lack of diverse content in the FB ‘verse. Today, I will preview four of the funniest Facebook pages to help you laugh, snigger, and guffaw whether you’re relaxing at home or sneaking in some FB surf time at work.
Everyone knows the Internet loves cats. And this one is all about cats. It’s all about funny, obnoxious, weirdo cats. You’re hooked already, aren’t you? This page has really taken off and boasts over 6.6 million “likes” and it’s only been up since late 2012. As a follower, you’re often treated to a super cute Pusheen the Cat cartoon, pretty much guaranteed to amuse and entertain every cat owner (or would roommate be a more accurate title?) because they all focus on the strange little things our feline friends love to do. Today’s cartoon has a cat looking at a cabinet, then he sneaks into said cabinet only to find it’s dark inside, so he promptly leaves the cabinet just to stare at it from the outside. Okay, so maybe it doesn’t sound so hilarious when I describe it, but trust me, it’s pretty darn funny when you see the image. There is also a surprising amount of Pusheen merchandise available should you feel catty.
Oh, this site is contentious, that’s for sure. ‘God’ uses a Voltaire quote for its tag line: “God is a comedian playing to an audience that is too afraid to laugh”. Personally, I find a lot of the posts on this page funny and harmless, but there are, of course, those who believe religion is off limits in the joke-world. So I’ll leave it up to you if you want to check this out one. Keep in mind, though, that many jokes on this page are not about religion and are just plain silly. For instance, this joke was posted this morning: “Old Saying – Think Before You Speak. New Saying – Google Before You Post”. Although they have 1.6 million “likes”, they’d probably have close to that many “unlikes” if such an option existed. Every so often, someone will post an angry “how could you make fun of religion” comment. However, for the most part, ‘God’ gives rather benign responses to even the most belligerent of Facebookers. The latest one: “Timothy” commented that it was disrespectful of the page admins to represent themselves as God (although “Timothy” didn’t put that as nicely as I did), to which ‘God’ quipped: “If you don’t believe in Me, then you’re an Atheist. It’s just that simple. But don’t worry, I’ll show you mercy. I always do (this was followed by a smilie-face emoticon).”
2. The Nerdist
The Nerdist is constantly updated with new content and has to be one of the busiest pages on Facebook. The Nerdist creates tons of original videos that feature hilarious actors and commentators. In case you didn’t know, comedian Chris Hardwick is one of the founding members of The Nerdist. If you’re not familiar with Hardwick, which you really should be because he’s hilarious, you may remember him from that raucous early 90s MTV show “Singled Out”. He’s also a stand-up comedian, and actor, and radio host, and…well, the guy’s done a lot of stuff, but The Nerdist is possibly his best. This page is full of diverse nerdy content, anything from cosplay to interviews to guest starts (including Weird Al and Nathan Fillion) to parody videos…they have it all.
1. George Takei
Does anyone not love Takei? Even if you’re not a Star Trek fan (which I’m not – I’m a Star Wars gal all the way), Takei is pretty much everyone’s cup of tea; well, everyone who is cool, anyway. 7,124,000 followers agree with me. Chances are, if you’re on Facebook, you’re familiar with Takei’s awesome page, but I’m adding this one here for those of you who may be a little bit of a “noob” in the Facebook stratosphere. So, what makes Takei’s page so wonderful? His best asset has to be his sense of humour, but his palpable humility also makes him shine. Takei seems to be one of the nicest guys in the world. I really don’t think that’s much of an overstatement. He’s also enthusiastic about fan interaction and he constantly reposts funny photos, artwork, and messages from fans. His page is wicked fun to be a part of. One of the other great things about Takei is his unyielding political convictions when it comes to human rights, and it’s refreshing to see a celebrity unafraid to take such a powerful stance when it comes to standing up for people worldwide.
