Gilmore Girls: “It’s a religion – It’s a lifestyle”. And if you want to find the ultimate place to stave off a case of ennui and wave your Stars Hollow banner with like-minded fans, you need to check out these four Facebook pages, tout suite (naturally said in Michel’s dulcet tones).
About: “Welcome to Stars Hollow, Connecticut, a charming, small and slightly off-center town known for green lawns, clapboard houses–and enough quirky characters to fill every hayride, parade and picnic for miles. It’s here that we meet headstrong 32-year-old Lorelai Gilmore, who carves out a comfortable, warm, caffeine-filled life for herself and her equally willful teenage daughter, Rory. But when Rory’s attention turns from dreams of private school and Harvard to thoughts of boys and adolescent self-reliance, single mom Lorelai begins noticing more of her own rebellious youth–only 16 years ago–in Rory.”
Ah, this spot is just the place to be for Gilmore fans! As soon as you click on the page you’re greeted with a lovely image of the heart of Stars Hollow, and then directly below, you have two virtual stickers: “I love you, you idiot” and “You’re a vicious trollop”. Yep, we’re definitely in the right place. If you’re a fan of gifs, you’ll love this recent post: “Need more Gilmore? Good thing GIPHY is making Every. Gilmore. GIF. Ever. Relive every laugh, cry, and Gilmorism at giphy.com/gilmoregirls”.
And boy, they aren’t kidding! If you look at GIPHY’s Gilmore page, you’ll find everything neatly separated into categories. You’ll find gifs sorted by character: Lorelai, Rory, Emily, Richard, Luke, Dean, Jess, Sookie, Lane, Michel, Tristan, and Paris. You can also choose “Reaction” gifs: “Excited”, “Stressed”, “Flirting”, “Fail”, “Over It”, or “LOL”. You can choose gifs sorted by season. And if you don’t want to limit yourself to searching in just one category, you can also scroll down through the long page of “All Gilmore Girls Gifs”. The official FB page also posts a lot of fun little videos and other gifs, like one with a pig running through Stars Hollow bearing a countdown to the Four Seasons mini-series event. Another post says, “Greetings from the Festival of Four Seasons!” and has a gif of someone placing a pretty blue Stars Hollow postcard into the mailbox. You’ll also find “Dear Kirk” letters where you can write in and Kirk will respond. My favourite Q & A: “Dear Kirk, May I dress up as you this Halloween? – Rayankika D. Kirk’s response: I’d be happy to offer my services as a Professional Kirk to ensure the authenticity of your costume”.
About: “Daily quotes from Gilmore Girls Quotes.”
Gilmore Girls is famous for its quick, quippy one-liners, so this page is a must-have for fans of the show. Each quote is put to the accompanying screencap or gif, and it’s really fun to scroll through this page and relive the best moments from the show. “I need coffee in an I.V.” a desperate Lorelai tells Luke in season one. A clip hailing from season four has Lorelai and Rory huddled together in the kitchen, snuggled up in sweaters and hats, next to an open oven (because their window broke): “Hey, did anyone ever think that maybe Sylvia Plath wasn’t crazy, she was just cold?”
A flannel clad, backwards-baseball-capped Jess stands before a disgruntled Luke: “I thought this was the uniform”. “Okay, in this one you have…” Rory and Jess kiss in an aisle at Doose’s. Sookie tells Lorelai, “That makes me so mad. And so sad. I’m smad!” Rory and Paris toast each other, “I’ll eat to that.” A weary Lorelai tells Luke, “I can’t stop drinking the coffee. I stop drinking coffee, I stop doing the standing.” “You are full of hate and loathing, and I gotta tell you, I love it!” Lorelai tells Luke as she takes a seat in the diner. “Did I put on underwear?” a thoroughly fatigued Lorelai asks Rory. One of my personal favourites, though, is a petulant Rory bemoaning, “I need a taco!” Although there are obviously tons of quotes here, this page also posts a lot of great Gilmore related news and the occasional merchandise items (like a fun t-shirt saying, “I drink coffee like a Gilmore”).
About: “Gilmore News has been sharing news, spoilers, trivia, and episode discussions since 2005. With 11 years of history and nearly 4,000 posts written, we are your top source for Gilmore Girls and your most reliable source for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life news, spoilers and updates.”
Gilmore News is a really cool page with a plethora of Gilmore blog entries, articles, and neat links leading to GG merchandise. Of course right now everyone’s abuzz with news of the Gilmore revival at the end of the week, so what better way to celebrate than with a video featuring Luke’s coffee: “2 days left! We’re going to need all the coffee. I’m ready! Are you?” The link leads to a Gilmore page on Cafe Press where you can get Gilmore coffee cups, t-shirts, pillows, magnets, and signs. The best thing about this page, though, is the constant feed of updates and news.
One recent post is full of “Interviews, photos, videos & more!” and the admin “read dozens of articles and watched a ton of videos, pulling together anything that was *new* or unique about Gilmore Girls”. There’s a truly touching tribute to Edward Herrmann (Richard Gilmore): “With Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life set to drop this Friday, it’s only fitting that we all take a moment to remember the benevolent champion of the series, Edward Herrmann, who always brought joy to both scene and set of Gilmore Girls. The loss of Edward Herrmann loomed large over the cast during the filming and the loss of Richard Gilmore pays tribute to those feelings.” There’s a nice write-up with photos for the premiere of A Year In The Life. Another article asks, “Will ‘A Year in the Life’ be the end of Gilmore Girls?” There are also really interesting articles breaking down pivotal moments in the show with quotes from cast members, like this one: “Amy Sherman-Palladino, Alexis Bledel & Jared Padalecki chime in on why Rory slept with Dean”.
About: “We watch together. We share our thoughts. We enjoy the show and each other.”
The first thing you’ll see on this page is a chart showing you the premiere times across the world for A Year In The Life. So you can be sure this weekend is going to be extra busy for this group! This page is always active, though, and it’s cool to read and participate in discussions with fellow fans. The comments are fun and varied, and many of them are prompts for Gilmorey (new word?) discussion. One recent question starts with “Am I the only gilmore girls fan who doesn’t like coffee? I’m gonna have coke in my coffee cup on friday… Ala alexis bledel lol. #nocoffeeplease#cocacola”.
Some fans post screencaps and then comment on the scene, like one featuring Emily giving a thorough dressing-down to Mrs. Huntzberger. One fan quips, “’Cocktail waitress’ -Emily’s version of the ‘C’ word LOL”. There are episode observations, “Well guys I just finished ‘Bon voyage’. It’s only my second time watching it. I’ve watched every other episode a billion times but I only watched this episode when it came out and now. I’m still really disappointed but at least I know I will be watching new episodes the day after tomorrow and everything will end up the way it’s supposed to!!!” Some fans even get techy and make really awesome screencaps with captions from cast appearances on talk shows. And you’ll even find the occasional Gilmore Girl product review, like a recent post about Blue Moon GG beer (Cappuccino Oatmeal Stout, and apparently it’s really good).
