Although YouTube is well known for its music videos, fanvids, and fan covers with poor acoustics, the channel has also become a large platform for world news. Where much of the Internet is dominated by American content, YouTube is a great place to find international news from many different outlets. Here are the four best political stations from around the world:
About: “The National is the flagship news and current affairs program of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Canada’s public broadcaster. Broadcast seven days a week, the show is anchored by Chief Correspondent Peter Mansbridge.”
CBC‘s The National has been on YouTube since 2007, and has long been a mainstay in Canadian broadcasting (since 1954). “I don’t make the news,” Peter Mansbridge, chief host since 1995, says in the channel trailer, “I report your stories”. “We do our best to report only what we know as fact,” he goes on to say, “because facts matter. And if at the end of the day we’ve affected one policy, one person, that’s not a win; that is the news.”
The National covers a number of different topics ranging from “VRBO ‘luxury villa’ turned out to be cockroach-infested”, “Drones pose a threat in the skies”, “Ghomeshi complainant speaks out”, “CRA execs treated to soiree at private club”, and “The global move to totally eradicate polio”. They cover a lot of topical politics like their piece which asks, “Are corporations the new voice for social change?”, or the one asking“Will the United Nations end the war on drugs?”. They also ran an expose giving you a “First hand look at poverty in Russia”. The National sometimes takes a lighter view of history as well: “Look Back/Space Travel”. Some of the playlists include: “Debating the Headlines”, “Justin Trudeau”, “Wendy’s Picks for 2015”, “ISIS and Terrorism”, “Our Canada”, “Climate Change”, and “Voters of Canada”.

The Young Turks is an extremely popular American YouTube political news channel that first began in 2002 on Sirius Satellite Radio. Often simply going by TYT, they broadcast shows on multiple outlets including Hulu and Roku, but YouTube is by far their principle channel. They used to also broadcast a show with Current TV but this was discontinued in 2013 when Current TV was bought by Al Jazeera. They cover a wide variety of content and most of their videos run from five to fifteen minutes.
TYT examines global news, but they always have a firm foot in American politics. This year, much of their content is focused on the American Presidential Election with topical videos pointed at each primary. For instance, some of their videos following the big NY primary include: “How Progressives Should React To Bernie’s Loss in New York”, “Donald Trump Wins GOP Primary in New York”, “How to Debate Hillary Clinton Supporters”, and “Voting For the Lesser of Two Evils in 2016”. Non-election videos include: “Cop Freaks Out When Armed Residents Answer Door”, “Teen Live Streams Friend Getting Raped”, “Johnny Depp’s Forced Apology to Australia”, “Anti-Trans Man Changes Name to Bruce Jenner”, and “Man Kicked Off Plane For Speaking Arabic”.
