While Tumblr has been very popular amongst photographers and other visual artists since its inception less than ten years ago there haven’t been many world famous musicians taking to the platform as of yet. This is slowly starting to change, particularly for those artists hoping to reach the teen to mid-twentysomethings who make up the majority of the social platform’s users. I’ve found an eclectic mix of the four most interesting musicians on Tumblr.

This former Motley Crue bassist has recently switched mediums and taken up photography, and he’s quite a gifted photographer at that. His black and white pictures are beautiful and often haunting, and usually depict strangers he encounters on the street. Sixx’s short commentary bits below the pictures give you a flash idea of the people in each portrait. His Tumblr site looks to be abandoned as of late, the most recent post is from the summer of 2013, but there are enough photos here to keep you busy for awhile and it’s definitely worth checking out even if he doesn’t post again any time soon.
The most recent photo depicts a thin aging man with the only note saying, “India”. Another shows a man with parted lips, squinting in the sun, with this caption: “I was heading back to the tour bus when i saw a black cat run across an alleyway and scurry like a rat up to this gentleman. He was sitting against a wall listening to music. The cat had run up to him and was rubbing up against his leg for some affection ( or maybe begging for food ).We both interrupted him,one for love, one for a photo. He didn’t look that down and out except his weight but he said he was.I am sure he was,but he did have some nice chains and a iPod.This is that moment.M240 50mm Noc/Vancouver”. A little further down, you’ll see a hollowed-cheeked man taking a long pull from a cigarette: “Edger.Victoria Canada. We hung out for a bit outside this institution shooting photos.I asked him if anybody inside would want me to take their picture and he said ‘You wanna come in?’ I jumped at the chance but as we were heading deep down a hallway I was stopped by the guard/staff.I tried like hell to push past the red tape but it was government run and I’ve run into this situation enough to know I was going nowhere fast.Edger gave me a grin like ‘Well kid,we almost made it’. Leica Monochrom 35mm lens”. Although you won’t find much music here, there’s a poetry in his images and commentary, making this one of the coolest finds on Tumblr.
Wentz is the bassist and backing vocalist for the popular band Fall Out Boy. His posts generally consist of a mix of his own band’s news and promotional materials as well as shout-outs to fellow musicians and artists. Recently, he’s been retweeting news for Weezer’s brand new album Thank God for Girls with his added comment “Thank God for Weezer”. Another recent post is Panic! At The Disco’s new video for their song “Emperor’s New Clothes” with Wentz’s comment: “Dang Brendon kills it in this new Panic! At The Disco video: Can’t wait for you guys to hear the new record Death Of A Bachelor! It comes out on january 15 go preorder it.”
A few weeks ago Wentz posted this inspirational message after sharing a number of Charley Marley songs: “The second @charleymarleyuk song I heard was wonka bar. When Charley explained it to me – he said this song was where he was at – at the time … Just making art and music and like all of us hoping that one would turn into the golden ticket. To me this thing we have all built, you – us the bands in some kind of deranged Charlie and the chocolate factory where we can just be noisey and strange and we all fit in because we don’t fit in at all. Come sing along to wonka bar… More music soon… Your weirdness is your own golden ticket.” There are reposted tributes to Frank Sinatra, many more shout-outs to other industry peers, and a plethora of links for Fall Out Boys interviews and music.
About: There is no tagline.
If you’re a Beyonce fan and you want a look at her life outside of music, this is really the only place you’ll find it. Famous for guarding her privacy from prying eyes, Beyonce surprisingly offers fans an inside look at her daily world through her Tumblr site. Her homepage brings you to a collage of photos with options on the right: “My Life, “My Work”, “B TV”, “The Throwback”, and “The Vault”, with furthur options for “Tumblr”, “Music”, “Beygood”, “Fragrance”, “Shop”, and “Tour” lining the bottom.
“My Work” features a few posed shots, but most of them are pictures snapped of Beyonce whilst performing live on-stage, with many of them capturing her on-stage collaborations with other musicians. “My Life” gives you colourful images showing Beyonce’s home life, often with her palling around with her husband and daughter. “The Vault” brings you to an archive where you can choose from “Editorial”, “My Life”, “Performance”, “B TV”, or “All” with the option of using a year and month filter for your search. “The Throwback” naturally brings you to a collection of Beyonce photos over the years, all of them are professional photographs, most of them originate from magazine features. “B TV” simply brings you to “The Vault”, so I’m not sure why it’s listed as a separate option. All of the photos on her page are large, sharp, and beautifully shot, including the personal photos in “My Life”.
About: “NOTES FROM THE ROAD/ www.ladykier.com ”
The Lady Miss Kier is actually Kierin Magenta Kirby, the singer and fashion icon from the popular 90s’ band Deee-Lite. If “Groove Is In The Heart” is suddenly stuck in your head, you’ve got the right gal. In addition to music, Lady Miss Kier is equally famous for her infectious reboot of the swinging 60s’ go-go fashion which swept through the early 1990s. Luckily for us, Lady Miss Kier maintains an active Tumblr blog and it’s interesting, funny, colourful (we’d expect nothing less from LMK), and always entertaining.
Kier’s humour is often a bit caustic, like her Halloween GIF of an old movie clip depicting a gruesome group of devils stabbing their pikes at something (someone?) in a large pit; below Kier quips, “Church taught me this… Happy Hell-o-weinner”. Below that you’ll find a 30 year old photo of Kier: “1982 fashion statement..inspired by Hazey Fantazy…’shiny shiny bad times behind me’…..i never figured out how to sell these clothes but i sure loved making them…the east village was thriving with artistic talent…we expressed ourselves by making our own clothes or re-shaping re-cycling thrift store garments…still do…gravitate towards what you love- lady Kier”. There’s a photo she posted of Diane Charlemagne: “R.I.P. You know her voice from “Inner City Life “ She was my neighbor when I lived on Romola road in South East London. She told me about her struggles as a songwriter fighting to get publishing rights in the DnB scene , yet she was a positive person and remained uplifting . it’s very sad to hear she passed from cancer….this disease can kiss my ass! R.I.P. angel listen to her angelic voice”. Kier’s site is full of funny quips, inspirational messages and images, and sincere acknowledgments towards fellow artists.
