Some of us are born with the ability to see inspiration in everyday household items. These people possess a certain knack of being able to transform these items into useful and really cool new creations. Most of us, however, are not so craftily inclined, so we need a little help. Fortunately, Tumblr is a great source to help you find your next exciting Do-It-Yourself project. Here are the four best DIY Tumblrs out there:
About: “CreateForLess.com is an online craft supply store with a mission to inspire creativity on any budget. Stick around for our favorite DIY Tutorials, Tips, Craft Confessions and products that make us smile. Shop CreateForLess for everyday discounts on your favorite craft supplies. ”
You can learn how to make cute family representations from clothes pins and a bit of fabric. Another post shows you the way to make a festive felt football wreath just in time for the kickoff of the season. You’ll find a link to a blog detailing the steps for making a Watercolored Feathered T-Shirt (with drawings of feathers along the collar, you don’t use any real or faux feathers). One of the best “trick” projects shows you how to turn circular pieces of Styrofoam and paint into an outdoorsy wood candle centerpiece.
If you’re looking for Halloween costume ideas, you’ll find a recent post teaching you how to make a unique Lisa Frank inspired multi-coloured unicorn costume complete with a floating rainbow (using only streamers, construction paper, and a rainbow balloon). More projects include instructions for how to make a driftwood sign, how to decorate your ottoman with tassels, and how to make Wired Word Wall Art which you can fashion into any amount of foreign language phrases you desire. Rainbow Coasters and Leather Cuff Bracelets are just a few more projects you’ll find here.

This blog is a cool resource because they post nifty DIY things from around the web, so you’re not limited to any one style or genre here. One of my favourite recent posts they shared is a link to watch a video of how to make your own glow-in-the-dark fancy wood table! The pictures are cool enough on their own, but the video (by Indestructibles) makes it look even more awesome. The trick is in cutting deep grooves into the wood and then filling those grooves in with glow-in-the-dark magic. Now, you will need carpentry tools and know-how to complete this project, but it is pretty fantastic.
Of course, there are easier projects to be found here as well, such as the Spilled Coffee Cup Light Holder which can be made with a fork, a plain (or fancy) dish, coffee cup, coffee beans, and a hot glue gun. There are also instructions on how to make your own Wedding Aisle Heart Decor sticks, Marble Nail Polish Pencil Holders, or Cup De Lights. Another neat one is a step-by-step picture tutorial on how to make Felt Flower Boutonnieres, how to make some glittering pendants, and a guide on making your own Nautical Knot Bracelets. Some of the most inventive recent posts teach you how to make quirky stepping stones out of leaf imprints and how to Grow Your Own Geodes.

This blog is all about lists. For example, you can learn about 20 Stylish DIY Kitchen Ideas, including how to make A DIY Kitchen Island, a Kitchen Island Cart, how to make a Kitchen Island From Antique Sideboard, and how to make an ‘Industrial Look’ Kitchen Island. You can also learn how to make a Kitchen Island from a dresser, how to make Kitchen Island with only $15, and much more. Another list gives you 17 Unique Kitchen Backsplash Ideas.
A rather dazzling list shows you 17 Beautiful DIY Rustic Bedroom Projects: How To Add A Wood Ceiling DIY Tutorial, how to make a DIY Rustic Headboard, how to make a Wood Framed Mirror, how to make a Pallet Wall, How To DIY A Gorgeous $3 Nightstand, and how to make Chandelier Twig Crafts to decorate the room. About: “a visual collection of sewing tutorials/patterns, knitting, diy, crafts, recipes, etc.”
You’ll find an unusual DIY blog here because there is actually very little text accompanying project ideas. Instead, the steps are predominantly shown with pictures and maybe a few diagrams here and there. One recent project shows six different hued clothes hangers with another picture beside it of a work table, with paint cans and brushes strewn all over, there’s a tarp, and a snazzy scrawl of “Enjoy the Process” splashed over the photo. Another tutorial first shows an adorable little dog wearing a fitted flannel jacket, then there’s a pic of an adult men’s flannel shirt of the same pattern, with closeups and an arrow indicating “From this — to this”. Then you’ll see a dog-sized flannel coat already sewn together, before you arrive to another photo panel detailing the order to cut and sew the pieces, with minimal textual instructions, and you are then treated to the final flannel dog image.
Another great one shows you how to make tiaras and crowns out of simple wire, you’ll also find visual instructions for making a Leaf Catchall, you’ll see how to make a decorated ponytail tie, and learn how to turn a strapless bra into an Elastic Strappy Bra. There are Cute Concrete Planters and A-Frame Organizers you can learn how to make. There are directions for how to trick out a pair of shoes, as well as a whimsical guide on how to make a DIY Cat Tent (which is really pretty extraordinary).
